SOUTHBRIDGE: Ruth Ila (Douglas) Perkins, 98, of High Street, died Monday, Aug. 13th, at Southbridge Rehab and Healthcare.
Her husband of 50 years, Emerson Perkins died in February of 1995.
She leaves two daughters Susan Laflamme and her husband David of Newcastle, Maine and Holly Perkins Christo of Southbridge, 2 grandchildren Angela Bradstreet and her husband Jim of Topsham, ME. Scott Laflamme and his wife Lisa of N. Yarmouth, ME. One great grandson, Ryan and three great granddaughters Nikki, Taylor and Morgan all of Maine.
She was predeceased by three brothers, Arthur Chase, Norman Chase and Howard Chase. Ruth was born in Concord Vermont on April 29, 1920, the daughter of Harley and Mae (Ford) Douglass and settled in Southbridge in 1943 at the Nurses Quarters on Oak St. when she started to work at Harrington Memorial Hospital after her graduation from Brightlook School of Nursing in St. Johnsbury, VT.
She married Emerson in 1945 upon his return from WW II and went to work for Dr. Henry A. Grzyb in 1949 she continued until her retirement. During her retirement she volunteered as a “Pink Lady” at Harrington Memorial Hospital.
Ruth and Emerson spent many happy winters in Florida where they recreate the loving community amongst who they had spent their youth.
Ruth was a member of Elm St. Congregational Church for over 60 years. In her later years she lived with her daughter, Holly, and enjoyed playing cards and dominos with her family and friends.
Her funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August, 18th in the Belanger-Bullard Funeral Home, 51 Marcy St., Southbridge. Calling hours are 6 to 8 p.m. in the funeral home, Friday, August 17th.
