ASHFORD, CT – Robert E. Williams, 91, of Slade Rd., died in his home on Sunday, September 19, after an illness. His wife, Elizabeth (Nelson) Williams, died in 1995. He leaves two sons, Robert E. Williams, Jr., of Dunmor, KY, and Markus J. Williams, of Ashford, CT; a granddaughter, Tracey D’Amico, of Rumford, RI; one brother-in-law, Robert E. Nelson, of Lake Worth, FL; 5 great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. He was predeceased by 4 brothers and 3 sisters.
He was born in Brookfield, MA, the son of the late Herbert and Mabel (Brooks) Williams. He served 35 months in the 84th Div. Engineers, a combat battalion, as a Camouflage Technician for the United States Army during World War II and served in many campaigns throughout Italy, Central Europe, Southern France, and the Rhineland. He was awarded a Good Conduct Medal, the European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon with six Bronze Battle Stars and a Bronze Service Arrowhead for participating in the invasion of Southern France.
Before his retirement in 1986, Mr. Williams worked for the Agricultural Department at the University of Connecticut as a herdsman for 35 years, where he managed the dairy and horse barns. He had a true love for animals, chickens, and nature and enjoyed wood carving.
A graveside service will be at 1:00PM, Monday, October 4, in West Ridge Cemetery, North Main St., Charlton.
