CHARLTON: Robert S. Ewing, 89, of Masonic Home Rd. died Friday, October 5, at The Overlook Healthcare in Charlton. He leaves his wife of 64 years Winifred (Day) Ewing, a son Christopher Ewing and his wife Debbie of Bangor, Maine; three daughters Pamela and her husband Steve Walker of Lakeland, Fl; Sandra and her husband David Hoyt of Coventry, Ct; Kathleen Ewing and her friend David Lowman of Frankford, WV; a sister Ruth Buhrman Of Alexandria, VA; 5 grandchildren and 3 great grandsons. He was born in Northampton the son of Stanley and Harriett (Fiske) Ewing and lived in the area many years. He served in the US Army during World War II and was in the occupation of Japan. He graduated from University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1941.
He was superintendent, principal and teacher at Charlton schools for many years and retired in 1981. He was an active member of the Federated Church of Charlton and chaired itâ??s 225th anniversary celebration.
He was a trustee for Harrington Memorial Hospital and the Old Sturbridge Village. He collected historical memorabilia for the towns of Amherst, Bernardston and Charlton. He was also a collector of antique bottles and an avid gardener.
