STURBRIDGE: Robert Lewis Butterworth, 95 died Friday Jan. 11 at his home surrounded by his family. His wife Barbara (Jarosz) Butterworth died August 1, 2001.
He leaves a daughter Judith Trifone Leveille of Fiskdale, a brother George F. Butterworth Jr. of Sacramento, CA., a sister Ruth Fish of Attleboro, a granddaughter Britt Anne Trifone of No. Oxford. He also leaves behind his beloved cat Clawdette and his great grand-dog Sydney “Cha Cha”.
Born in Southbridge he was the son of George F. Butterworth Sr. and Sybil (Marcy) Butterworth and lived in the area all his life.
Bob graduated from Cole Trade High School as a machinist in 1942. He served in the Navy during WII and the Korean War aboard the U.S.S. Smalley.
He retired from Russell Harrington now Dexter Russell at the age of 85, in 2011 after 45 years of service. The machine shop at Dexter Russell was named in his honor for all his time and knowledge.
He joined the Quinebaug Lodge of Masons A.F. & A.M. in 1947 and was the oldest and most senior member. He was a member of Doric Chapter, Hiram Council of Royal and Select Master Masons, Worcester County Commandery No. 5 Knights Templar. Bob was also a member of Melha Shriner’s in Springfield and the Hampshire Shrine Club. He was also a dedicated member of the Brookfield Unitarian Universalist Church.
Bob loved traveling, boats, animals and was known for smoking cigars, so much so he even enjoyed a couple of puffs the day he died.
The family would like to thank his caregivers; Sylvia, Danny and Rosie as well as the staff at Compassus Hospice.
Keeping with Bob’s wishes, all services including a Masonic service will be private.
