Philip Jones

STURBRIDGE – Philip B. Jones, 88, of Old Farm Rd., died Wednesday, August 10, in Radius Healthcare Center. He leaves his wife of 61 years, Marie G. (Gates) Jones; two sons, Stephen G. Jones, of West Brookfield, and Brian B. Jones, of Sturbridge; one daughter, Nancy R. Ambrose, of Worcester; 7 grandchildren, Matthew Jones, Lauren Jones, Nikki LeDuc, Samantha Prescott, Melissa Jones, Patricia Jones, and Timothy Jones; 3 great grandchildren, Clayton Lodge, Kasey Jones, and Kaitlin Prescott; a sister, Elizabeth J. Glover, of Millbury; a sister-in-law, Margaret Nichols, of Middlebury, VT; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by one son, Philip B. Jones, Jr., one brother, Walter Jones, and one sister, Ruth Jones.
He was born in Waitsfield, VT, the son of the late Walter E. and Lena (Bushnell) Jones, and grew up in the area. Mr. Jones graduated from Waitsfield High School in 1941. He continued his education at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, graduating in 1946 with a Bachelors degree in Engineering. He moved to Southbridge to work for the American Optical company as a Plastics Engineer. After 27 years of service, he retired in 1984.
Mr. Jones was a Mason and belonged to the Mad River Valley Lodge, #77 in Waitsfield, VT. He earned his 60 year pin from the Lodge in 2011. He volunteered with Meals-on-Wheels for over 20 years. Mr. Jones was a member of the Federated Church of Fiskdale and Sturbridge and was a member of its Auction Committee. Mr. Jones was a former member of the Board of Trustees of the Federated Church and the Joshua Hyde Library. He enjoyed woodworking and made 50 Sturbridge Hitchcock Chairs for the family and the church.
The family of Philip B. Jones wishes to thank the staff of Radius Healthcare Center and Hospice Care who cared for their father.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2PM, Sunday, August 14 in the Federated Church of Fiskdale and Sturbridge, Maple St., Sturbridge. Burial will be private at a later date in the Hope Cemetery, Worcester. There are no calling hours.
