Oren R. Shiro, 94, of Tipton Rock Rd, died Monday, Aug. 25, at Overlook Masonic Healthcare.
His wife D. Jeanne (Manzer) Shiro died in 1997.
He leaves a son Mark A. Shiro of Boston, a daughter Dr. Cindy Shiro of Southbridge and 2 brothers: Burton J. Shiro of Waterville, Maine, Theodore Shiro of Naples, FL, a sister Gladys Adelson of Portland, Maine.
He was predeceased by a daughter Lois A. Shiro who died in 2006 and 2 sisters Marcia Beckerman and Anna Price.
His daughter Cindy took pride in being able to care for him during his final days. She and daddy shared poker at Foxwoods and rooted Rory Mcilroy during the PGA Championship. These times will never be forgotten.
Oren was born in Newton, the son of Louis and Ceclia (Wasser) Shiro. After graduating from Colby College, he joined the Navy during WWII. He served on the attack cargo ship USS Titania. He participated in 14 invasions and served as beach master for 9 invasions.
For 40 years he owned and operated the Jefferson Hotel in Waterville, Maine.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Waterville, and the Shriners in Portland.
He was an outstanding athlete and was inducted into the Maine Hall of Fame. At Colby College he was the only athlete of his time who majored in four sports in a season (basketball, football, baseball and golf). He was the oldest man to win the Maine State Golf Amateur at 59 years old. He won the New England Seniors three times. He participated in the US Senior Golf Championship twelve times.
He will be remembered lovingly by his friends and family for his family support, sense of humor, hard-working nature and his patriotic pride.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, September 3, 2014 at the Maine Veterans Cemetery, 163 Mt. Vernon Road, Augusta, Maine 04330.
