Mabel Silverberg

STURBRIDGE: Mabel (Nordman) Silverberg , 95, died on June 16, 2013, born July 14, 1917, died as she wished, peacefully, at home in Amherst, cared for by family. Mabel had lived in and loved Sturbridge for some seventy years. A genuinely caring and endlessly giving soul, she opened her home and her heart to her family, her community and her church. She welcomed everyone – her braiding club, her sewing club, her couples’ club, the Merry Mates, the Sturbridge Players, the neighbors, the aunts, uncles, cousins, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren -- into the stone house on Willard Road, where she served home baked cakes and pies, along with ample portions of laughter and compassion. She volunteered for whatever task needed doing at the Sturbridge Federated Church – cooking, cleaning, folding clothes, sanding and caning chairs -- and at the Sturbridge Senior Center -- delivering Meals-On-Wheels, setting tables and serving food. Mabel leaves her son Carl Silverberg, Jr. of Knox PA; her two daughters and their husbands, Faye and Jim Willis of Ferdinand, IN; and Nina and Michael Shandler of Amherst, MA; and her brother Ernest Nordman, of North Kingstown, RI, along with seven grandchildren, and 10 great grandchildren. Silverbergs and Nordmans -- nieces, nephews and in-laws – will miss her dearly. Her husband Carl Silverberg -- who called Mabel “his angel on earth” -- died on September 10, 2004. Mabel’s life will be celebrated at a Memorial Service at the Sturbridge Federated Church, Maple St. and Rt. 131, Sturbridge, on Saturday, July 6 at 10:00 am. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Mabel’s name to the Sturbridge Federated Church, 8 Maple Street, Sturbridge, MA 01566 or to The Fisher Home Hospice, 1165 North Pleasant St., Amherst, MA 01002. Belanger-Bullard Funeral Home, 51 Marcy St. Southbridge is directing arrangements.
