SOUTHBRIDGE: Joseph G. Funcasta, 87, of Litchfield Ave. died Wednesday, January 11, 2017 in his home after a sudden illness. Joseph is survived by two daughters: Amy Tufts and her husband William and Beth Crocker and her husband James, both of East Falmouth; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife of 52 years, Linda (Morris) Funcasta in 2011.
Joseph, a lifelong resident of Massachusetts, was born on January 19,1929 in Westfield, the only child of Gabino and Josephine (Zacek) Funcasta. After graduating high school, Joseph was hired as a drafting apprentice at GE In Pittsfield. Following completion of his apprenticeship, Joseph joined the Army, where he served during the Korean War, specializing in internal missile guidance systems repairs at Redstone Arsenal in Alabama. After his discharge, Joseph attended UMass Amherst where he also met his wife, married and became a dad before earning his bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. After moving to Southbridge and starting a short career at American Optical, he then furthered his education, graduating with an MBA from American International College in Springfield in 1966. Soon after, Joseph began working for Polaroid in Cambridge as a Senior Engineering Administrator in camera development where he commuted for 18 years until early retirement in 1985.
Joseph was a member of the Quinebaug Lodge of Masons A.F. & A.M. for over 50 years, the Melha Shriner’s in Springfield, and the Shriner’s Legion of Honor. He also belonged to the Elm Street Congregational Church in Southbridge for over 50 years.
Joe enjoyed socializing with friends and family, collecting antique tools and tube type radios, going for car rides on back roads as well as being out in nature, planting flowers and gardening.
A memorial service will be held at 11am Sunday, January 22, in Belanger-Bullard Funeral Home, 51 Marcy Street Southbridge, MA.
