John Crosbie

August 31, 1922 — February 16, 2008

SOUTHBRIDGE: John C. S. Crosbie passed away Saturday, February 16 at Radius Healthcare in Southbridge, MA after a brief illness. He was born on Staten Island, N.Y. in 1922 to William G. Crosbie, of Edinburgh Scotland, and Edith Rowley, a Southbridge native who was teaching art after graduating from the Pratt Institute in N.Y. John spent his early childhood in Guantanamo Cuba where his father was made manager of the Guantanamo Sugar Refinery. John attended Southbridge schools until the seventh grade when he entered Suffield Academy in CT. He was then accepted into the class of 1944 at Harvard University. He left Harvard in 1943 to join the Army Air Corps. He met his future wife, Ada Mae Liddle, in Sunbury, PA while training at Susquehanna University. Upon completion of his training, John was assigned as a navigator on a B-24 bomber in the South Pacific. While stationed in the Philippines, preparing for the invasion of Japan, the war ended. John spent a year as part of the occupation forces in Japan. He then returned home to his wife and son in Sunbury. A second son was born in 1947. In 1949 the family moved permanently to Southbridge. John was a member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce in Southbridge, treasurer of the Hamilton Rod and Gun Club, a fifty year member of the Quinebaug Masonic Lodge, secretary then president of the Southbridge Rotary Club, and a vestry member at Holy Triniy Episcopal Church. John worked as a manufacturer\'s representative for various companies and as a purchasing agent for the American Optical Company. He had been Executive Director of Southbridge Housing Authority for 13 years when he retired in 1992. John is survived by his wife of 63 years, Ada Mae, son Thomas, daughter-in-law Araceli, son Christopher, two grandchildren Mari Ada and John, a brother William of Tarrytown, N.Y. and ten nieces. He was predeceased by his brother Ronald of Sherborn, MA. His funeral service will be held at 10:00AM Thursday, Feb. 21st in Holy Trinity Church, Hamilton St. Southbridge. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery. Calling hours are 5:00PM to 7:00PM in the Belanger-Bullard Funeral Home 51 Marcy St. Southbridge, Ma.
