Fr. Ernest Trahan
December 12, 1927 — February 13, 2014
SOUTHBRIDGE: Fr. Ernest Trahan, 86, died on Thursday, February 13 at Christopher House in Worcester. He died after a period of declining health.
He is survived by his brothers and sisters: Rene Trahan of Southbridge, Conrad Trahan of Southbridge, Ronald Trahan of Wadsworth, Illinois, Paul Trahan of Aurora, CO, Gloria Bachand of Framingham, and Diane Trahan Handy of Dudley. He is predeceased by Carmen Casey and Armand Trahan. He will be missed by nieces and nephews and all who knew him.
He was born December 12, 1927, in Southbridge, the son of Leo and Jeannette (Reeves)Trahan.
At the age of 14 he left home to enter the Brothers of the Sacred Heart in Grandby, P. Q.
Brother Ernest was assigned to Lesotho, South Africa, in 1954. There, he taught high school for approximately 20 years. During this time he also designed schools and churches for Fr. Gilbert, an Oblate Father of Mary Immaculate and Vicar General of Lesotho. In 1976 Fr. Ernest was ordained as a diocesan priest. In 1977 he founded a retreat house in Lesotho, Foyer of Charity. He was assigned to the parish of St. Anne in 1983 and, in 1987, he became the Rector of the Minor Seminary. As the Diocesan Chancellor of the Leribe Diocese from 1988 to 1996, Fr. Ernest served in many parishes of Leribe. In 1996 he retired and returned to his home town of Southbridge.
Fr. Ernest enjoyed working in carpentry and masonry. He helped tune the organ at Notre Dame Church and did many repairs at the church. He also painted and did art works in watercolor.
His Mass will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, March 8, at Notre Dame Church of the Blessed John Paul II parishes, 446 Main St., Southbridge, it will be celebrated by Fr. Leo-Paul Leblanc, pastor of Immaculate Heart of Mary in Winchendon, MA.
His burial will follow at Notre Dame Cemetery, Woodstock Rd., Southbridge.
