SOUTHBRIDGE: Eleanor (Crete) Rankel, 88, of Therese Ave. died on November 4, 2021, at Southbridge Rehab and Nursing. Eleanor leaves behind a son Robert Rankel and Diane Landry of Prince Edward Island, Canada, a daughter Barbara Cordell and her husband Bob of Southbridge; 6 grandchildren Sarah and her husband Zachary LaVergne, Robert and Raine Cordell, Robert Joseph Rankel, Amanda Lemire, Casandra Proulx, Sean Desmond, 16 great grandchildren and nephews and nieces. Eleanor was predeceased by her husband of 60 years Robert E. Rankel November 13, 2104 and their son Dennis J. Rankel March 14, 2009.
Eleanor was born in Quincy, MA daughter to the late Rene Crete and Lillian (Bernard) Crete. She was a Wells High School Graduate Class of 1951. Eleanor was voted best dancer in her senior year and was a cheerleader for 4 years. She also belonged to the Jep Jep Club in high school.
Eleanor worked as an Administrative Assistant at Harrington Home Care for many years before she retired. She was part of the founding members of the Haven of Hope Hospice. Eleanor enjoyed playing pitch, and Bingo. She took many trips with her friends to Foxwoods, and they enjoyed going to New York City to watch the plays. Her and her three girlfriends, Joan Capillo, Bea DiPaolo, Dot Burrelli and belonged to the unofficial Golden Girls Club. She was an avid reader of many books. Eleanor was a PTA member of St. Mary’s School. She was a Cub Scout Den Mother for her two son’s Cub Scout Troop 140. Her family and friend were always very important to her. She was a member of the St. John Paul II at St. Mary’s Parish.
Her funeral will be held Tuesday, November 9, from the Belanger-Bullard Funeral Home, 51 Marcy St. followed with a Mass Christian at 10AM in St. Mary’s Church, Hamilton St.
Burial will follow in New Notre Dame Cemetery.
