STURBRIDGE - Dr. Kenneth G. Phillips, 84 of the Fiskdale section of Sturbridge,
died at his home on Big Alum Lake on Monday, September 19, where he had
been a summer resident for over 70 years. His last wishes were to be brought
home to spend his final days with his family at the place he loved most.
Dr. Phillips was predeceased by his wife Barbara in November 2003, and a
brother Maurice in April 2004. He leaves his three children, Kathryn Kogut and
husband Stanley of Wilbraham, David of Fiskdale, and James and wife Betsy of
Brimfield, and his two grandchildren Jessica and Alexander Kogut. He also leaves
two sisters, Jean Canning of Falmouth and Martha Fearing of Sturbridge along
with several nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed by all.
Born in North Adams, February 17, 1921, he was a 1940 graduate of Mary E.
Wells High School and a 1954 graduate of Pennsylvania College of Optometry.
He was a World War II veteran, having served as a radio operator/navigator
aboard a B-24 in the 491st Bomb Group (8th Air Force) in the European Theater.
He practiced optometry in Great Barrington and later in Westfield, where he was
a resident for over 35 years. He was active in many community affairs and was a
long time member and past president of the Kiwanis Club.
Calling hours will be Thursday, September 22 from 6 to 8 at the Belanger-Bullard
Funeral Home, 51 Marcy Street, Southbridge, MA (behind Notre Dame Church).
Chapel services will be Friday, September 23 at 1:00 p.m. at the Massachusetts
Veterans Cemetery in Agawam, MA.
