Anita L. Hebert, 96, died peacefully Thursday, May 30, 2013 after a brief illness at Notre Dame Long Term Care Center in Worcester.
She was born in Quincy, MA in 1917, daughter of C. Hector and Philominia (Langevin) Hebert. She moved with her family at a young age to Southbridge, MA. She graduated from Mary E. Wells HS in 1934 and went on to graduate from St. Vincent's School of Nursing as a Registered Nurse.
Anita joined the U.S. Army as a nurse in 1943 and was deployed to New Caledonia in the South Pacific where she tended to often severely wounded service men and women. She served there until 1945 and achieved the rank of Captain.
After her discharge from the Army Anita attended Marquette University and earned a masters degree in nursing education. She then went on to work for the Veteran's Administration first as a nurse, then as a nurse educator and later as Educational Director in many VA hospitals in the U.S. and Puerto Rico until her retirement in 1977.Anita enjoyed traveling in her early retirement; was an avid gardener and enjoyed being with family.
Anita leaves 2 nephews: Thomas Hebert of Southbridge and Len Hebert, Jr of East Brookfield with whom she lived and several grand nephews and nieces and 9 great grand nephews and nieces.
She was predeceased by her 3 brothers: Fr. Hector Hebert, S.J., Lionel "Len" Hebert, Hervey Hebert and her sister Alice Hebert.
Anita was adventurous, had a strong independent spirit, was a dedicated nurse, who served with compassion. She loved her country, her family and was truly a woman before her time.
Her funeral will be held at 10:00AM, Thursday, June 6th, at Blessed John Paul ll Parish at Notre Dame Church, 446 Main St., Southbridge, Burial will follow in St. George Cemetery, Paige Hill, Southbridge. There are no calling hours.
