CHARLTON: Albert E. Merchant, Sr., 83, of Center Depot Rd, died Saturday, November 07, 2015 at the Masonic Home at Overlook.
He leaves his wife of 56 years Claire (Riopel) Merchant; four sons, Albert E. Merchant Jr., of Bolton, Stephen Merchant of Oxford, Michael Merchant of Sturbridge, Christopher Merchant of Charlton; a sister; Patricia Benedetto of Uxbridge; grandchildren and nephews and nieces.
He was predeceased by a brother Harry Merchant and a sister Edna Desourdy.
He earned the distinctive rank of Eagle Scout and also received the Ad Altare Dei medal, the highest award made to a Catholic Boy Scout.
He joined the Army during the Korean War and was an expert in the explosive demolition field. After his discharge from the Army he joined the Air Force reserves.
Al retired from Pratt and Whitney Corp. after many years of service. After his retirement he was a driver for the Masonic Home.
He was a member of St. Joseph Parish where he was a Eucharistic Minister and an Acolyte for 28 years. He was also a member of the Quinebaug Lodge of Masons AF AM and the Knights of Columbus, both of Southbridge, and the Scottish Rite.
Al had a passion for photography and has earned many awards for distinctive and creative photographs. He also enjoyed being active in the church, Western Movies and trips to Vermont.
His funeral will be held Thursday, Nov. 12, at 10:30 AM in St. Joseph Church, Putnam St. Ext, Charlton (Please go directly to church). Burial will follow at Northside Cemetery in Charlton.
Calling hours are 4 to 7 PM Wednesday, Nov. 11 in the Belanger-Bullard Funeral Home, 51 Marcy St. Southbridge.
